We bought the Flying Cloud 30FB for the bunk area.  We wanted a place for our grandkids and guests to sleep and relax.  So why are we ripping it out?

I love the bunk area when the grandkids are here.  I hate the bunk area when they aren’t because it take up space that we can’t use in our day to day living.  That pretty much sums it up.

We needed a way for that area to be functional for the grandkids and company, but also functional for us when they aren’t here.  Coming up with a way to make that work took a lot of vision and a giant leap of faith.  It was a risk.  Briefly the question hit my mind of “are we bringing down the resale value?” but then my bigger thought…..”who cares”.  This is our Airstream and we are the ones living it. So we ripped it out.

In our discussions we listed the things we wanted in that space:  A very comfortable place to relax and unwind at the end of the day, a place to talk, to watch movies, a place where guests/grandkids could sleep, and a place for the converter and lithium batteries to be stored.  Once we figured out what we wanted for that space Paul set out to make it happen.

*We thought about keeping the top bunk and just remodeling the bottom section but an adult cannot sit on the bottom without hitting his head so it had to go.

Once the top bunk was gone we removed the bottom mattress and then Paul was able to better visualize the space.

I painted the walls.  One wall white, and then I used stencil on the other wall to add some interest to the space. I’ve always wanted to do that!

We removed the original TV and added a bigger TV.  We hung our magnetic shelf back up that holds the remotes and game controllers and Paul installed extra plugs and wall mounted them.

We lost the big open space under the bed where we kept our dirty clothes basket but that space was very inconvenient anyway because you practically had to lay down on the floor and crawl under there to get anything out.  He added three pretty deep drawers which were way more functional for us.

We added a wall mounted fan from Amazon which we absolutely love.  It’s quiet and takes up very little space.

Paul built a little shelf to go over the TV and I was able to add some decorative items including Alexa which gets her off my new kitchen counter and out of the way.

We added star lights in the room and it’s one of my favorite things.  When we sit in there at night it gives such a relaxing feel to the space.

We used the original full size mattress from the bottom bunk but cut it down to a twin and used another piece to make a cushion.  Together it looks a bit like an L Couch.  I purchased a futon cover for the twin and a matching cushion cover from Amazon.  We added throw pillows and ended up with a very comfortable bed/couch to sleep or just relax and watch tv.

We plan on replacing the tan curtains with white roller shades to match the rest of the Airstream but they are a bit costly so we are waiting to get past COVID to place that order.

It has the approval of the grandkids and the dog!
