Does anyone actually like their dinette?

Our Airstream dinette was not bad where dinette’s are concerned.  We used it for almost a year and it was very functional for us.  We used the space to eat, work, play games, paint, do puzzles, etc.  What we didn’t like about it…it took up way too much space.

It came out past the wall and made the walkway very narrow.  It did have some pretty good storage but to utilize the big storage space you had to get down on the floor and almost lay down to find anything you stored down there.  We are old, need I say more.

We’ve remodeled several different areas in our airstream and this area was the most difficult to plan out.  To help us visualize we used painters tape on the floor so we could get an idea of how much space our ideas would take.  This was very helpful.

Our goal for the dinette space was to gain back at least a foot of walkway, keep good storage,  make the storage more convenient, maintain a sleeping space for guests, create a windowsill, have a place to keep my diffusor, add a space to store some electronics, and be COMFORTABLE.

Paul and I are a good team.  I come up with the ideas of what we need or want in the space, and he draws up the plans, builds it, and makes it come to life.  This is the way we have always worked together and it works for us.  I’m bad at visualizing, hence the painters tape on the floor, but Paul gets my vision. He’s just that good.

He measured, thought about it, and created exactly the perfect new space for us.

We also needed a little extra something for the wall next to our new bench seating and I’ve always loved shiplap so Paul added some to that little space and it totally changed the look.  It’s beautiful and gives it a little nook feel.

Paul was able to use one of the spaces to fit some electronics such as the wifiranger, the weboost, our mifi, some plugs, etc.

The brown cushions in the picture below are the original cushions from the dinette. We took them out of the zippered cover, cut down the cushions to fit then put them back in the zippered cover and just folded down the excess and tucked it underneath.

We purchased a neutral futon cover to make it look like one big cushion then added throw pillows. I love the way it turned out and wouldn’t change a thing about it.

We added an olive wreath and couch table from Amazon to complete the look. The couch tables are so convenient. We bought two of them and use them for eating, crafts, computer work, etc. They move around and tuck in when we want them out of the way. We love them.

We stained the “window sill” with natural stain color. In the morning I sit here and look out the window with my coffee.  My diffusor is where I want it and my Pottery Barn plant adds beauty to the space.  It’s comfortable and cozy just like we wanted.

I love my airstream and full timing but I never wanted to feel like I live in a camper or that it’s temporary.  I want to feel like this is our home because it is.

If you have a space in your RV that you want to change then do it.  Put your touch on it so you love your space. And please comment below and tell us about it.

  1. Hey there fellow RV’rs! I love all the remodels you’ve done and you now have such a beautiful trailer. I currently live in a truck camper but plan on getting an Airstream 30fb next year. I intend on gettting a parrot and will need a place for a big cage. Any ideas on how or where I could put that in that trailer? Paul seems very intuitive.

    1. Hello and thank you for your comment.

My first question is what are you willing to give up? The couch, the dinette, or the bunk area?
Assuming you are looking at the same make and model we have, my first thought is to give up the couch area but you would have to build some sort of base to cover the furnace and the overhead cabinets would limit the height of your parrot cage so I don’t think that would work for you unless you intend to custom build a cage to fit the space.

I think putting the parrot cage in the dinette area would probably work best for a large cage assuming you have kids using the bunk area but keep in mind you will lose seating, a table, and storage not to mention having to work around the wheel well.

If you don’t have anyone using the bunk bed area then rip it out and use that area. The windows are small and oddly placed without the bunk but your parrot would have lots of space for a roomy cage. Keep in mind you would need to keep the existing base or a modified one to cover the hot water heater and plumbing but you should still have plenty of room for a good size parrot cage that isn’t too tall.

Let me know what you decide. I hope our comments have been helpful. Reach out if you have anymore questions.

      Happy travels.
