On July 10, 2020 we were beach bound with the grandkids to Galveston Island RV Resort to celebrate our grandson Keegan’s 9th birthday.  His older brother Landon came along and we were all thrilled to hit the beach and enjoy some summer fun.

Galveston Island RV Resort is only 2 hours away from our home base so the kids weren’t bored at all and it was a nice relaxful trip. To pass some time before check in we stopped at Buccees in Texas City and had a picnic lunch with the kids in the parking lot.  Due to COVID we did not take the kids into Buccees like we normally would. It’s so nice having an Airstream that we can just park anywhere and not have to worry about letting slides out, etc.  Just put the steps down and enjoy lunch then back on the road again.

As we rolled into Galveston and picked up the scent of the salt air our moods were happy and light.  All stress from the week just faded away with every breath.  The beach is definitely my happy place.  Galveston Island RV resort is located on the West side of Galveston but even fighting the heavy traffic to get through the long stretch did not dampen our spirits.  Is there anything better than being on the 1st day of a long weekend watching the waves rolling in with your relaxing weekend ahead of you?

Check in was at 2pm and it was hot hot hot outside when we arrived so the kids played video games in the AC while Paul and I got everything set up for the weekend.  On a side note I made some carrot apple juice with my new NAMA juicer and served it up cold.  Keegan loved it!  In case you are interested I put the link below: (not a paid subscription).

Later in the afternoon (still hotter than a pepper sprout) we explored the park.  We started by taking Jaxie to the dog park.  There is no shade at the dog park but it is fenced, mowed, and clean.  I’m not sure why but anytime we travel to a new park or location Jaxie refuses to go potty for hours.  We have to walk him and walk him and walk him until he can’t hold it anymore.  Just as we thought he did a lot of sniffing but took no action.

There are cute little cottages that can be rented sprinkled about the park.  I don’t know much about them as we stay in our Airstream but they look clean and well kept from the outside. Very pretty.

From there we hit the lazy river.  This is the reason we booked this park.  We were happy to see that it was not crowded.  Keegan was a little shy to get in but Landon enjoyed floating around the loop.  The lazy river is small and narrow but beautifully surrounded by palm trees and fun for the kids.  It has music playing in the background and picnic tables to sit and watch the kids or eat a snack.

After the lazy river Keegan wanted to hit the pool so off we went. The pool is located next to the lazy river and a decent size, clean and surrounded by palm trees which definitely give it a resort feel.   There are lounge chairs and picnic tables.  You can get a small variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks up the stairs in the office area if desired.  A pizza food truck is parked outside the swimming pool and open on Friday.  The pool had more people and kids but still not packed and the kids enjoyed swimming while Paul and I relaxed.  There was a nice breeze from the ocean nearby and we felt relaxed and happy.

After resting back at our campsite and getting dinner prepped we headed for the beach.  The beach is a little hike away and although you have to cross San Luis Pass Road it is within walking distance.  The lazy river and pool were great but the beach is what I’d been waiting for.  Not only was I excited to put my own toes in the sand but also because this was our 10 month old puppy, Jaxie’s, first time at the beach.  I envisioned our playful puppy child frolicking through the sand and waves with as much joy on his face as I had on mine.  Alas, he quickly let us know that although he loved eating seaweed and playing in the sand, he did not like the water at all and strained as far he could go on his leash in the opposite direction from the water.

Paul layed a towel down on the beach and sat with Jaxie while I walked on the shoreline enjoying the sand and waves.  The boys had such a goodtime running through the water and playing frisbee.  Since we had to cross a major road we left with plenty of light outside and headed back to the park.

There was still 45 minutes left for the kids to swim at the pool before it closed so after much begging we headed back there.  There were more kids at this time and the boys became involved in a water football game with the other kids.  They had so much fun, especially Landon who was enjoying the attention of the girls his age.  As we watched the boys play in the pool I was very much impressed with Landon.  He seems to be a born leader organizing the game and leading it with humbleness and confidence.  The other kids naturally looked to him for their next moves and it was amazing to watch how effortlessly he led this group of teenagers in the game.  It’s one of my favorite memories from this trip and I felt very proud of him.

Back at the RV we dried off outside and put together shrimp boil foil packets for the grill and just relaxed.  Our campsite was located along the fence line with a cow pasture on the other side and it was fun watching the beautiful cows graze on the pretty land with the beach houses and beach in the background.

After dinner we made ice cream smore bowls by warming up marshmallows and chocolate chips in the bottom of the sugar bowls and then topping with cold ice cream.  It was the perfect end to a great first day.

The kids were full, happy, and tired from a day of fun and went straight to sleep after their showers.  It was a great first day and seeing the smiles on their faces made us so happy that we chose this RV park.
The next morning we set up the griddle on the park provided picnic table and had our traditional birthday pancakes for Keegan.  Homemade pancakes with whipped cream and strawberries.  It was delicious.

After cleaning up we decided to go to the beach during the morning hours since it was going to be another scorcher of a day with temps in the high 90’s.  We packed up our beach tent and sunscreen and headed out leaving our beach hating puppy child behind in the AC.  We took the truck this time so we could bring the boogie board and cooler.  Landon swam and built a sand castle with one of his new friends from the park while Keegan and Paul collected seashells, played frisbee, and made their own sandcastle. Landon ended up joining a group of young adults playing football frisbee and I was amazed he could be so active and still breath in this heat!  After two hours it was even hotter and we decided to head back.

The rest of the day we went back and forth between the pool, lazy river, and Airstream, and then back to the beach in the late afternoon.  At dark all the park kids met up at the lighted court and played dodge ball.  It was a great Saturday that ended with a movie and popcorn. Our hearts were full with our boys piled on our bed sleepily watching a movie with us and munching on popcorn tired from a weekend of summer fun.

Sunday morning we had a light breakfast and then packed up to go.  The boys were sad to leave but we will be coming to this park again and recommend it for your family.  Ours was a great experience.
