Legendary Alpacas of Texas

Paul and I are both retired and live full time and travel in our 2019 Airstream Flying Cloud 30FB Bunk. To celebrate our retirement and start full time traveling we booked our first night at a Harvest Host and stayed at the Legendary Alpacas of Texas in Maypearl, TX. From the moment we texted the Alpaca Farm (their preferred method of communication) we were treated warmly. Gina is the owner and was the one who responded to our text in a timely manner. She was welcoming and witty in her texts, especially when I mentioned this would be our first Harvest Host stay. Her response had me rolling…..”How Cool! I have to apologize in advance….not all are as amazing as we are. Lol!”

Maypearl is off Hwy 45 going toward Dallas from the Houston area. The closer you get to the Alpaca Farm the prettier the scenery. We texted Gina 30 minutes out to let her know we were almost there as requested and she was available to direct us to our parking space. The Alpaca farm is absolutely beautiful, clean, landscaped, and as soon as you drive in you can see the alpacas which is very exciting. This farm also has an Air BNB which was occupied with a family while we were there in our Airstream. Gina offered to run us an extension cord but the day we stayed in August was overcast and it was cool so we didn’t need it.

Our Airstream set up

We have a Jack Russell mix puppy child and followed the rules by keeping him on a leash and supervised the entire time we were there. They do have a friendly farm dog that roams freely as well as free range chickens and turkeys so be mindful of their safety with your animals. I wasn’t sure how our Jack Russell would do around the other animals as he’s never seen an alpaca or chickens and surprisingly he didn’t bark at them just looked at them with puzzlement and curiosity which was hilarious.

We visited the Alpaca farm store and they have everything Alpaca. Sweaters, hats, scarves, socks, rugs, blankets, etc. Gina told us all about the Alpacas and their fur and how the products are made. It’s very interesting because the fur taken from their upper bodies are used to make different products than the fur taken from their, legs, etc. Nothing is wasted. You can also purchase natural soaps that include an alpaca wool wash cloth. Also in the store there are tons of ribbons and trophies from Alpaca competitions all over and Gina’s Alpacas place very well. We ended up purchasing a beautiful Alpaca rug for our Airstream and it has a lifetime warranty. What a great investment in our space.

Outside of the Alpaca store is a bucket of zip lock bags filled with Alpaca food. You can take a bag of feed by putting $2 in a a money box using the honor system. We did this and fed the Alpacas which was a wonderful and fun experience. The Alpacas will take the feed out of your hand by gripping it with their lips and we had a blast feeding them. Beware of the black Alpaca, he will take it all and not leave any for the others if you let him, lol.

Feeding the Alpacas

This farm has beautiful winding roads and we took several long walks down them while we were there. This farm is very well maintained and you can tell by the way they tend to their property that they love their animals and land. It’s a very peaceful place and inspires rest for the body and soul.

Legendary Alpacas of Texas

Later in the afternoon Gina took us on her ATV up to the back piece of the property where their house is. This is where they keep all of their chickens and turkeys and baby Alpacas. Seriously, these animals have better living quarters than a lot of people. And very secure to keep them safe from predators. I’ve never been that close to a turkey and had no idea they were so beautiful. I will forever feel guilty at Thanksgiving now, thanks Gina. She also named off all of the different beautiful chickens and hens and we bought a dozen eggs from her. Did you know that different chickens lay different color eggs? I did not. Imagine different pastel colored easter eggs and this is what their natural eggs looked like. I almost didn’t want to cook them but I did and they were good. This tour was one of the highlights of our day and we really appreciate Gina’s time.

We only stayed one night but we learned so much about these animals and it was an amazing experience. If you get the chance we recommend you go and if you do please tell Gina we said hello.

We linked our YouTube video about our stay below so please be sure to leave us a comment and say hello.

Catch you down the road friends.
