Our 2019 Airstream Flying Cloud 30FB Bunk

We named our Airstream Liberty and we’ve had her a little over two years. We live and travel with her fulltime and she is the wind beneath our sails. We love our Liberty and have remodeled many parts of her so we can all coexist together fulltime in harmony.

The first change we made to her was the biggest and costliest. The kitchen was our largest pain point and had to be changed to live and travel comfortably. We do not consider her a camper but rather our home. Cooking is an important part of our everyday life and brings me joy so the original small countertop was just not enough. We removed the existing couch, added lower cabinet drawers, plugs, new hardware for the whole kitchen to match, and a new countertop from Lumbar Liquidators. We painted the old lower cabinets to match the new ones and it looks beautiful. My husband Paul did all the work and cabinetry himself and did a fantastic job. A year after our initial kitchen remodel we remodeled a second time and added a washer dryer combo. Here are before and after pictures and I linked our kitchen remodel and washer dryer videos below as well. It turned out amazing.

The next change we made to Liberty was replacing the floors. We did not like the color and type of floors that came standard and replaced them with Lifetime Water Proof flooring from Lowe’s. It completely changed the look of the Airstream interior and made it feel more like home for us. Check out the pictures below. We also added the link to our floor remodel video below.

Next we decided to remove the dinette. The original dinette did not look bad and was pretty functional but it came out past the TV wall about a foot into the walk way making the walk way too narrow. We wanted to open up the center walk way which would help the Airstream look and feel a little bigger. After removing the dinette we placed painters tape on the floor to get a feel for the available space we had to work with and Paul took the measurements then created a custom bench with a window seal and added storage. It turned out amazing. We also removed the TV and added shiplap to that small wall. We repurposed the cushions from the dinette by cutting down the foam inserts and then added one slip cover to both repurposed cushions. The look was exactly what we wanted and did indeed make the airstream interior look much bigger. We were extremely happy with it and the size of the bench will allow one adult or two small children to sleep if we have guests. I’ve added some before and after pictures and linked the Dinette remodel video below.

As far as big remodel projects the last one was remodeling the bunk area. Initially we had mixed feelings about remodeling this area as we have grandkids come stay with us occasionally. We decided we needed to keep a space for someone to sleep but make this area functional for us as well. Prior to our remodel we were unable to use this space as the top bunk was too low to be able to sit on the bottom bunk and we just ended up using the top bunk for storage. We already live in a small space so to have that much wasted space just wasn’t working. Paul started by removing the top bunk and pulling out the bottom mattress. He then cut the frame down where the bottom bunk extended to create an L shape couch look with two storage drawers below. We cut down the Airstream bottom bunk mattress to match the measurements of the new L shape then sewed back up the mattress cover. We purchased two matching couch covers, one for the twin size mattress piece and one for the small end cushion. We love the way it opened up the space. We then replaced the small Airstream TV in that area with a larger one and added a few magnet shelves for the game system and remotes. This space still allows for our grandkids to sleep and play back there as well as to allow Paul and I to use that space when they are gone as a little living room to watch movies and talk. Since the remodel we have made several additional changes to this space including replacing the two windows curtains with shades from Zarcor to match the rest of the Airstream. We also created a magnet wall along the center wall and added strip lights. We LOVE this space in our Airstream home. We call it our cozy cove. Here are some before and after pictures and I’ve linked the video below.
